With Christmas just around the corner, many may recall last years trek through deep snow, axe in hand, circling evergreens and sizing up countless prickly specimens. For many families this annual Christmas tree hunt is a favourite holiday tradition so it’s nice to know that not only is it a great winter outing but it’s also an environmentally friendly choice (not to mention a priceless photo opportunity!). Find tree farms near you in our guide below.

Here a few things you might not have known about getting a ‘real’ tree from a tree farm near you, and why it’s a wise choice this Christmas.

Tree farms stabilize soil, protect water supplies and provide refuge for wildlife. Real trees are a renewable, recyclable resource.
For every real Christmas tree harvested, 2 to 3 seedlings are planted.
Each acre provides enough daily oxygen for 18 people!
Real trees are a product of local farmers, they are grown right here in York Region.
Many tree farms offer sleigh rides, cozy bonfires and hot chocolate.

Middleton’s Christmas Tree Farm

Watch for signs. Small, quiet family farm. Ample parking close to trees – ideal for seniors or small children. Beautifully pruned Scotch pine, Balsam and Canaan fir. Free baling. Take a walk through their trails, or feel free to bring a toboggan!

Weekends, dawn to dusk or by appointment weekdays.

Tufford Family Tree Farm

Small family farm. Scotch and White pine, White and Norway spruce, Balsam fir. Non-commercial setting, dogs welcome. Weekend refreshments, safe toboganning hill for the kids, open daily & weekends, free hot chocolate and cider, homemade cookies, open fire.

Stouffville – 5578 St. John’s Sideroad. Take Highway 404 north to Aurora Sideroad, then east to Ballantrae. Go north 2 km. on Highway 48 to St. John sideroad then east to farm.
